Rongai Route

The sole route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border, is the Rongai way. Despite growing popularity among climbers, this route is still quite uncrowded.

Rongai has a gentler grade than the other routes on the mountain. It is the recommended way for those seeking an alternative to the popular Marangu route, those seeking a more remote trip, and those climbing during the rainy season (the north side receives less precipitation).

Rongai is a moderately tough route that is highly recommended, especially for first-time backpackers.

Although the scenery is not as varied as on the western routes, Rongai compensates by crossing through actual wilderness areas for practically the entire distance. The Marangu route is used for the descent.
